BANGUI (LNC) – The state Centrafrican water distribution company (SODECA) still in chronic inability to accomplish its duty. In Bangui, and worse in province, the population has to content themselves with water stemming from well.
Clear water in houses, coming out of household faucets, a platitude in Western, is in CAR a very rare exception. Because other than privileged in Bangui like diplomats, high ranked politicians and others like, for the most common people, being able to access drinking water can be a minefield.
Situation in the capital Bangui, quite eponymous, in front of completely neglected provinces, always living in the middle age. The so called “Bangui la coquette” – Bangui the beautiful – of past 50/60′ under colonial era, feeding clear water practically to all, is now a phantasm.
With dry season sticking its nose over the horizon, signs of a potentially crisis appeared, already done in the 4 and 5th districts, currently experiencing problems to get access to clear water.
Drinking water in Bangui for everyone? Necessity to find it in wells with water distribution fountains over them. E.g. the situation in the Gobongo district, where people gets up at the ungodly hour of 3 in the morning, trying to have water. A long tail of people with cans, awaiting their tour to have the sacred basket.
That rise idea in mind of few clever clogs to set up a very lucrative business, consisting in selling water to all in need of it.
The traffic takes place like that, a kind of head dealers sells water coming from fountains to retailers at CFA F 15 the can, in the aim to resell it 100. Next after, profits are shared between them.
A juicy business that is beyond the SODECA’s control, knowing since a while that, it revealed itself, unable to provide people with clean water throughout the country.
An issue remaining a non interest for rich and privileged people, as they have running water at home as they want.
